History of Palace le Savoy

La Folie Douce is housed in a former palace, “Le Savoy”. This sumptuous building was built in 1901 and is part of Chamonix’s history. The owners were Adolphe Tairraz and Sarah Couttet (manager of the Grand Hôtel Couttet). Success was almost immediate. The name was inspired by the prestigious Savoy Hotel in London.

Sumptuous parties during the Roaring Twenties

After the 1st World War, the Savoy hosted numerous parties during the “Roaring Twenties”. A terrace was added after the 2nd World War. The architect was Henri Jacques Le Même, well known in Haute Savoie and Megève. The establishment is bought by businessman Élie de Rothschild.

The Club Med Chamonix period

It was then managed by the Club Européen du Tourisme from 1963. This company became part of Club Méditerrannée in the 1970s. Club Med Chamonix was enlarged in 1999. In 2018, Club Med decided to close its legendary Chamonix establishment, as structural costs were too high. The group wanted to focus on Club villages with direct access to the ski slopes and a large ski area.

For ski enthusiasts

If you’re coming for the ski season, you’ll find a ski store inside the hotel. The Skiset store offers Black Crows freeride skis and Rossignol ski rentals. The hotel is 5 minutes from the lifts to the Brévent ski area. For children or beginners, it’s possible to ski down to the Savoy ski area (1 conveyor belt + 2 bungee cords).
